Kristerfer Burnett, Baltimore City Council
Councilman Burnett is a lifelong Baltimorean. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland-College Park where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in African-American Studies with a concentration in Public Policy. He then earned a Masters Degree in Public Policy at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He has focused on a range of issues on the City Council, including affordable housing, urban development, education, safety, livable wages and more. He believes that the most fulfilling aspects of his life have been giving back to those who need it and empowering the residents of Baltimore to be change makers. Based in Washington, DC, Dave Sommer is a Public Policy Manager on the Politics, Government and Civic Engagement team at Instagram. He joined the company in March 2019, after several years as Head of Digital for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa. Before that, he worked as a reporter, editor and producer in various Canadian radio and TV newsrooms. He is currently watching the leaves turn red at his mom’s house near Montreal, but will be back in DC just in time for the US election. Sarah Shames, MaryPIRG Students
Sarah is the Campus Organizer for MaryPIRG Students. She graduated from Bennington College in 2017 with a focus in Political Science and Visual Art. Prior to working with MaryPIRG Students, Sarah has worked with PIRG’s student chapters in Washington, North Carolina, and New Jersey on campaigns to protect the environment, alleviate hunger, and increase youth voter participation. Saba Tshibaka, Black Terps Matter
Saba is UMCP Class of 2020, with a Majors in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and a passionate advocate for education and the socioeconomic empowerment of women and girls across the globe. She is a student leader involved in many groups and activities promoting diversity and inclusion. She spent three years in various clubs’ executive boards, two years as a tutor with the Academic Achievement Program, and a year as a manager at the College Park Black-owned business, Milk & Honey. She has also held internships with the U.S. Department of Treasury and Google Inc. Joanne Antoine,
Common Cause Maryland Joanne manages state outreach and engagement for key policy campaigns, specifically around money in politics and voting rights. Prior to joining Common Cause Maryland, Joanne worked for the Democracy Initiative where she helped engage local, state, and national organizations in the coalitions and campaigns in Maryland. She has also worked as an organizer, trainer, and strategist for numerous campaigns in the US and Haiti. Joanne completed her undergraduate studies at New Jersey City University and went on to receive a Master of Public Policy from Monmouth University. Gideon Epstein is an Election Protection Organizing Fellow with the Voting Rights and Election Protection teams. Gideon completed his B.A. is Government & Politics from the University of Maryland in December 2019. While at the University of Maryland, Gideon worked to engage young voters ahead of the 2018 midterms. In his free time, Gideon loves to cook for family and friends, play tennis, and go to Nats games. |
Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congress
As House Majority Leader, Congressman Hoyer is the second-ranking member of the House Democratic Leadership. He is charged with scheduling legislation for consideration on the House Floor, shaping House Democrats’ legislative priorities, and delivering the Democratic message. Congressman Hoyer attended Suitland High School in Prince George's County, and in 1963 he graduated with high honors from the University of Maryland, selected "Outstanding Male Graduate” that year. In 1966, he received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. That same year, at the age of 27, he won a seat in the Maryland Senate. Greeshma is a rising junior and Neurobiology and Physiology major at UMCP. She runs MaryPIRG's COVID-19 public health campaign to protect the health and wellbeings of students, staff, and all Marylanders and has worked to increase student participation in the recent primary elections. As Board Chair, Greeshma works to increase campus support for MaryPIRG Students' campaigns, works with chapter leaders to develop campaigns, and builds relationships with campus faculty, administratos, and student groups. graduated from Barry University in 2018, majoring in history and minoring in political science. During her time on campus, she served in various leadership positions centered on student engagement and civic leadership. Post graduation she held a fellowship with Food Recovery Network, championing collegiate-based food recovery programs to build community and combat climate change. Outside of working to change the world, she enjoys reading nonfiction, discussing U.S. political history, and plant-based meal prep. |
